Indian athletes performed exceedingly well in the Asian Games to come back with a record haul of 107 medals, the first time the country could cross a century of medals. In the overall tally, there were 28 gold medals, 38 silvers and 41 bronzes. India was fourth on the table, behind China, Japan and South Korea. Although athletics gave the most medals at 29 (6G, 14S, 9B), shooting gave India 7 gold medals and 22 medals overall. Individually, archers Jyothi Surekha and Ojas Deotale shined with three gold medals each in individual and team events, while shooters Aishwary Tomar (2G, 1S, 1B) and Esha Singh (1G, 3S) got 4 medals each. Indian athletes won medals across 21 events which was a wonderful thing. There were many first in these Games. India won its first medals in equestrian events, golf and cricket while Satwik-Chirag won India’s first gold medal in badminton.

Wrestling, beset with problems as the wrestlers were fighting a running battle with former WFI president B B S Singh, was disappointing this time as the wrestlers were nowhere near their best and could only return with 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. The archers also disappointed in recurve events. There was heartbreak in golf when Aditi Ashok lost in the final round despite leading the field from the start and in boxing when world champion Nikhat Zareen lost in the semifinal and Lovlina Borgohain had to settle for silver. In javelin, India did a historic one-two as Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena were outstanding.

With Asian Games done and dusted, all eyes are now on the Paris Olympics where the Indian athletes will compete with the best in the world. Also, the focus should now be on converting the huge number of silver medals into gold. For, there were many events where Indian athletes missed the gold by a whisker. They have to study their performance and train hard to ensure that they raise their game and convert silver into gold.
