Cakes laced with weed have become the latest craze in the party circuit in Mumbai. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) busted a bakery in Malad that was selling the item laced with the banned narcotic substance. In probably the first such case in the city, the NCB arrested a 20-year-old girl, her 19-year-old boyfriend and one more person for operating the illegal business from a flat.

The NCB raided the premises on a tip-off and found 850 grams of edible pot weed brownie and 160 grams of marijuana there. They found that the bakery was being run for the last one year. They also arrested the alleged drug supplier.

It is alarming that such young people are indulging in this dangerous trade and using novel methods to escape the NCB and police radar. The girl who was arrested is pursuing her BBA. The huge demand for narcotics-laced products and the lure of easy money makes these youngsters get into this business but they do not know that the consequences are devastating.

Drug use in parties in Mumbai and other cities and towns in India is now common. But as the NCB and the police have tightened the screws, supply is low. Further, with frequent raids on parties, it is becoming risky to use known forms of drugs like powder and tablet. Hence the demand for items laced with drugs has shot up in the last few years. Hash cakes and pot brownies are much in demand.

The discovery of the Mumbai bakery points to the fact that there are many others who are supplying such items to parties. The NCB and the police will have to keep a close watch on this new method of supply and consumption of narcotic substances. Instead of looking for known form of drugs they will now have to test all items on the food menu too.
