Can Bharat Be Saved By Being Anti-Muslim?

On the occasion of the anniversary of the Quit India movement today, Supreme Court advocate, former Delhi BJP spokesman and the uncrowned kin of political PILs in India, Ashwini Upadhyay, gave a call through the NGO Save India Foundation for people to assemble at Jantar Mantar to press for abolition of 222 British era laws and enact more practical laws in their place which provided swift justice to the people. But the event was marred by inflammatory slogan shouting against the Muslims. The organizers of the event and Upadhyay washed their hands off the incident claiming that it happened after their event was wound up and that the persons involved (the video is viral on social media) were outsiders and not known to them. The Delhi police is examining the footage and has registered a case against "unknown" persons.

Upadhyay has lately become the darling of right-wingers, admirers of PM Modi and Hindutva votaries for forcefully demanding a uniform civil code, law against intruders, law against religious conversions and a law for population control. While some of his PILs have raised important issues, like preventing criminals from contesting elections and even the present crusade of abolishing colonial laws, most of the issues are too closely linked to the BJP agenda and hence he does not receive widespread support. That is also the reason why he is admired by right-wingers and his speeches are widely circulated in their closed WhatsApp groups.

That, perhaps, is also the main reason why anti-Muslim slogans were raised during today's protest. People identify him with raising predominantly pro-Hindu issues and even if the accused were not known to him or the organizers, they thought it would be the best to grab attention in an event being held to demand uniform civil code, population control law and a law against religious conversions. The police must identify the miscreants, arrest them swiftly and proceed against them as per law.
