India beat the West Indies by 17 runs in the third and final T20 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to complete a 3-0 sweep of the series, after having beaten them by a similar margin in the ODIs that preceded this series. India's dominance was such that except for Nicholas Pooran, none of the West Indians can return with their heads held high. It is one thing to lose but it is another to be completely outplayed in all departments of the game. This West Indies side neither has the batters (except Pooran) who can stay at the crease consistently nor the bowlers who can trouble Indian batters.

India, on the other hand, rested many of its frontline players and the reserve players rose to the occasion to fashion three consecutive wins. In Suryakumar Yadav, India has found a player who can both stay at the wicket and score rapidly. In Venkatesh Iyer, it has found a finisher in the mould of Suresh Raina and M S Dhoni, though it is still early days to predict how he will shape out against better opponents. But the way these two smashed 91 runs in 37 balls in the third T20 was a treat to watch and perhaps a precursor of more such stands between the two. Harshal Patel is also developing into an attacking bowler in Shami's mould.

India played without regulars Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, K L Rahul, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin in all three matches and rested Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the last match after the series was sealed. Yet, the reserve players grabbed the opportunity with both hands and performed exceedingly well. This is one of the biggest advantages India has at the moment that it has enough talented and consistent performers to form two equally good teams in the shortest format. The West Indies will have to do a lot of introspection and find out where they went wrong. They have to up their game considerably in all formats to be competitive.
