As age catches up with men, one of the common problems they face is the enlargement of the prostate gland. The early signs appear generally close to the age of 50 years when they start having trouble passing urine.
The prostate gland is located just under the urinary bladder surrounding the urinary tract. It is normally the size of a walnut and is a male reproductive gland that nourishes sperms. With advancing age, the gland gets enlarged due to hormonal changes in the body. Since it puts pressure on the urinary bladder, passing urine becomes a painful task.
The common symptoms associated with prostate problems are:
1. Difficulty in passing urine
2. Poor urine flow
3. Putting pressure to pass urine
4. Frequent urination, especially at night
5. When the urge comes up it becomes difficult to hold
6. Sometimes, burning sensation and passing of blood in urine
The real danger of an enlarged prostate is that it can turn cancerous. It is better to consult a urologist immediately if one is having any of the above symptoms, especially if one is above 50 years of age. An enlarged prostate is generally asymptomatic in the beginning. Hence, men nearing their 60's should consult a urologist even if they do not have any symptoms to get a PSA test done to find out the state of the prostate.
An enlarged prostate(BPH) and even prostate cancer is curable if detected early. Hence, men above 50 years of age should never ignore any of the symptoms even if they do not persist initially. For, many times, the symptoms do not recur for many months after the first spark and the gland continues to get bigger. If a doctor is consulted when the symptoms appear for the first time, the chances of detection are much stronger and treatment can start early.
