Mental health was always a serious issue which was unfortunately not taken seriously in the past. People often did not recognize the problems being faced by a person who was not in the best of mental health and tended to dismiss him or her as 'crazy'. Things are changing now but a lot still remains to be done.

Positive psychology, or the techniques which help you in lowering your stress level, improving your level of happiness and garner more resilience in the face of adversity, is now emerging as a big tool to help people who suffer from anxiety, depression or low self-esteem. It is based on letting you focus on positive experiences and emotions, positive individual traits, positive relationships and positive institutions. Instead of dealing with dysfunctional or abnormal behavior, positive psychology is centered on helping people become happier.

With so many things, including the omnipresent social media pressure, emerging to distract people, it has become difficult to stay focused. People tend to be easily pressurized by even the smallest of things and bring undue pressure on them. This often becomes an obstacle to happiness.

Mindfulness, or the technique to purposely focusing your attention on the present moment, helps you in avoiding distraction. It can help you to discover your happiness zone by engaging in things that keep you engaged and absorbed and banish negative and toxic thoughts from your mind. The trick is to slowly have the situation when you want to do things that you previously thought as you have to do. Once you find your inner strength by getting in your happiness zone, you will feel energetic and perform better. Then it will be important to develop and strengthen a sense of gratitude which will help you in building strong relationships and magnify your happiness.

You must learn to do simple activities that lead to happiness. You must let go of resentment, envy and grudges and you must be self-compassionate and must not blame yourself for everything that goes wrong. Increasing your focus and alertness and relaxing your mind is the key to remaining positive which in turn is the key to reduce depression and increase happiness.
