Congress: Foundation Day Celebrated Without The Top Two Leaders

What can one make of the fact that the interim president and the person who aspires to be the Prime Minister of India in near future, belonging to the grand old political party of India, choose to give the Foundation Day event of the party a miss? It shows that either they do not attach much significance to the occasion or are simply not interested in running the party in real earnest.

Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi both failed to attend the event at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi. While Sonia has not been attending public functions for the last few months, Rahul Gandhi left for a short trip abroad on Sunday. In the absence of any press release from the party or Rahul himself, it is being conjectured that he has gone to Italy for a personal visit.

One can understand Sonia Gandhi's fears in not attending public functions in these scary times, especially when she has so many health issues. But since a Foundation Day event is a time to let the people know that the party is ready to take up the challenges facing the country with renewed vigour, Sonia could have attended the event virtually and spoken to the leaders assembled there. By completely ignoring the event, she has confirmed the public perception that she is just not interested in running the party anymore.

As for Rahul, he has committed a blunder by planning his visit abroad in such a cavalier manner. It will give his critics another handle to go after him. For a person who has big dreams and ambitions, Rahul Gandhi acts strangely. The Foundation Day event would have given him a ready platform to dwell on the past glory of the party and show the people how it was relevant and equipped to fight the brand of politics being followed by the BJP. By choosing to be absent, Rahul has strengthened the public perception that he is not the man who can take on Narendra Modi, now or in the future.
