In a huge relief for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court today stayed his conviction in the Modi surname case. Saying that the trial court did not give reasons for giving him the maximum punishment of two years which resulted in his disqualification for the Lok Sabha, the apex court stayed the conviction. This means that the process to reinstate Gandhi as a Member of Parliament can now be taken up.
The apex court said that "ramifications of the trial court's order are wide. Not only was Rahul Gandhi's right to continue in public life affected but also that of the electorate who elected him". But the court rapped Gandhi on the knuckles as it said that the statement made by him was not in good taste and people in public life should maintain restrain and caution.
While the Congress hailed the verdict as a strong vindication of truth, the fact is that the top court has only stayed his conviction, pending final adjudication. It has categorically said that his remarks were not in good taste. Rahul Gandhi has been steadfast in his refusal to apologize to the community of people whose surname is Modi and who he defamed. That means he thinks he committed no mistake. Although the Supreme Court has granted him relief, he must realize that in his bid to score a political point, he wronged the other Modis who are ordinary citizens and lead an honest life. The Supreme Court has also said he committed a mistake.
Whatever his political or legal fight, if he has some decency, he should apologize to those faceless Modis who he painted with the same brush and called thieves.
