Can anyone become an IAS officer through "back channels" without taking the civil services examinations? This stupid question has popped up only because social media is abuzz with rumours about Anjali Birla, daughter of Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, having done so due to the string pulling by her influential father.
Who are these people who spread such idiotic rumours? They either do not know the stringent and transparent process that goes into the conduct of civil services exams or do not respect both the institution and the meritorious students who go through the process.
The civil services exams are conducted over three phases - preliminary, mains and interview - and each phase weeds out the also-rans to select the cream. There is little chance that a candidate can slip through the process through 'backing' or manipulation.
By alleging that Anjali Birla did so without deserving to be selected is to degrade both her and the UPSC. It does not happen that way. The candidate has to put in enormous effort to be selected and the UPSC leaves no stone unturned to select the best from the lakhs who take the exam every year.
Several news agencies and digital media outlets have done a thorough fact check on these rumours and have found them to be untrue. Recently, Sudarshan TV had also aired an episode about what was being called "UPSC Jehad" where it was alleged that Muslims were entering civil services as part of a conspiracy to take over the country's administration. That was also found to be untrue on fact checking.
Those who are spreading such rumours are doing a great disservice to the nation. The investigative agencies should use technology to pinpoint the origin of the rumour and take action against those who spread such fake news. Letting them go scot free will embolden others.
