Sunil Garodia The India Commentary view

Apart from enmity between communities, the biggest fallout of the Nuh-Gurugram clashes is the adverse effect it will have on Haryana in general and Gurugram in particular as an attractive investment destination. Sectarian strife in a huge stumbling block to peace and a peaceful social environment is a pre-requisite for attracting investment. Gurugram has become an important centre for services export as it is increasingly becoming a hub for global capability centres (GCCs) of multinational firms. In this, it competes with other cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune, to name just three. The communal clashes and the response of the Haryana government have done much to tarnish Gurugram's reputation.

The other big fallout is that migrant workers, the backbone of Indian economy and the facilitators of infrastructure and services projects in any region, have been alienated and are reportedly leaving the area in hordes. It is a coincidence that a majority of these workers in the area are Muslims, some of them Rohingyas. The administration has already razed Rohingya settlements in the Tauru area of Nuh and has detained many Rohingyas. If the tide is not reversed and migrant workers keep deserting Nuh-Gurugram, several projects will come to a standstill due to shortage of workers and production in nearby factories will be adversely impacted.

The Haryana government has to take a pro-active stand in assuring the migrant workers that the action being taken against some miscreants is for their alleged involvement in the communal clashes. It must impress upon them that it is not an action against one community. It can take the help of industry organizations in this respect. If the government does not come across as fair and if the Muslim workers feel threatened and do not return, it will hurt Haryana's economy. Already, some organizations have called for a boycott of Muslims in Gurugram. If this continues and if the government does nothing to nip this mischief in the bud, sectarian strife will continue in the area and there will be no peace in the near future.
