Health Benefits Of Walking Regularly

Walking regularly can do wonders for your health. It is the best exercise and it is free. The only requirements are a strong will, a good pair of walking shoes and access to a public park with good pathways for walking. The best thing is that it can be done at any time during the day. Hence, one can adjust the time according to one's schedule. In short, there is no excuse to be a couch potato if you care for your body.

The importance of a pair of good walking shoes cannot be discounted because bad shoes can cause foot ache and can also result in an injury. Further, the walking trail should be smooth. Although it is best to walk on grass (Runner's World magazine rates it 9.5 compared to 6 for asphalt), any good and even surface would do. But concrete should be avoided as it is too hard and can cause joint pains.

Walking will benefit you immensely if you are suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or depression. It also helps to reduce memory problems and craving for sweets or chocolates.  Short walks are better to lower blood pressure while "interval walking" (more of it in the next article) is great for those wanting to lose weight.

To make walking more enjoyable, one can listen to music while walking or walk in a group. But when walking in a group, one should avoid including people who slow down one's pace. It is also advisable to take a longer route instead of going up and down a short route as that can become boring after a few days. Care must also be taken to avoid roads or pathways that are sloped or filled with potholes. If done right, walking can give you more health benefits in a shorter time than most other activity.
