A pathological autopsy for research that was conducted for the first time on a Covid-deceased in Kolkata has given doctors and health experts valuable insights into the damage coronavirus caused to the vital organs of the human body. The Times of India has reported that the autopsy was conducted on organ and body donation pioneer Brojo Roy at the state-run R G Kar Medical College by a team of doctors and the report has been submitted to the state health department.

The team of doctors found that the virus had attacked the lining of the lungs causing fluid accumulation. That had prevented the oxygen from going into the body causing hypoxia, a condition where not enough oxygen makes it to the cells and tissues in the body. This can happen even though blood flow is normal. Hypoxia can lead to many serious, sometimes life-threatening complications.

The virus had also damaged the tubules (the tube shaped structures that filter out waste products and fluids) in the kidneys causing tubular necrosis, a kidney disorder involving damage to the tubule cells of the kidneys, which can lead to acute kidney failure, due to which toxins got piled up in the body of the deceased.

As more such autopsies are conducted in the future, they will lead to the medical fraternity getting valuable insights into how the virus spreads inside the body and how it damages the organs. It will help them in developing better drugs to combat the infection. The team at the R G Kar Medical College has conducted four more autopsies on Covid victims and the reports are awaited. One of these victims had received both doses of vaccine.
