Mirabai Chanu, the Iron Lady from Manipur, managed to exorcise the ghosts of Rio and the disappointment five years ago by performing with customary flair and became the first athlete to win a medal for the country in the 49-kg weightlifting event. She bagged a silver medal with a total lift of 202 kg (87 kg snatch and 115 kg jerk). At Rio, she failed to make a clean lift and was marked DNF or did not finish and her tears would not stop. But this time it was all smiles as she reached her spot on the podium.

Mirabai hugged her coach when she realized she had won the medal and broke into an impromptu dance. She also said that she was dreaming of this for the past five years and added that "I don't just belong to Manipur, I belong to the whole country."
