Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee could not survive the multiple problems that arose after he underwent critical brain surgery. He later went into a deep coma after suffering a septic shock induced by a lung infection. Mukherjee breathed his last today. He was 84.

The Central government has declared a 7-day state mourning to pay respect to one of the most astute politicians India has ever seen.

Pranab Mukherjee was respected across the political spectrum mainly because he had a way to put things in their correct perspective. Even if things went against his line of thinking, he could salvage the situation by logical persuasion. No one ever felt put down by him and that won him friends and admirers across political parties.

His contribution in governance will remain unsurpassed. Mukherjee held many portfolios during his long innings at the Centre under Indira Gandhi , P V Narshima Rao and Manmohan Singh. He was also one of the most trusted lieutenants of Indira Gandhi. He gave up active politics in 2012 to contest for the election of the President of India. He served the nation as its President from 2012 to 2017.

He was one of India's most accomplished politicians who unfortunately could not become the Prime Minister.
