Do you feel scared or concerned when a wound swells up, turns red and hurts? Normally, there is no need for that because that is an inflammation and it is caused by the immune system of the body which is trying to fight the infection that caused the wound. It may also happen if a foreign object, like a splinter in your finger, enters the body. It does not only happen when a wound has already gone bad. It can start as soon as the wound happens because the body's immune system gets activated immediately.
Inflammation can happen if the body is attacked by pathogens like bacteria, viruses or fungi. It can also happen due to chemical reaction or mediation and due to external injuries. When one is afflicted by inflammation, one will experience redness, heat, swelling, pain and loss of function. All or some of these symptoms will occur. One might feel exhausted, ill or even have fever when inflammation happens.
Normally, there is nothing to fear. When inflammation occurs, the body's immune system releases several mediators to fight the infection or injury. While these mediators help with the healing process, they also irritate nerves and cause pain. Hence, it is required to protect the affected part to prevent pain. Inflammation can sometimes cause chronic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or bowel diseases like Crohn's disease. If inflammation persists, people should seek medical attention.
