The government has decided to cancel the Class X examinations of the CBSE board and has postponed the Class XII examinations. Given the fact that India is in the midst of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic which is more severe than the first, this is an appropriate decision. But one wonders that if teaching can be taken online in these troubled times, why can't examinations be held online? Since the 10th and 12th standard examinations are said to be transformative for students, cancelation is likely to have an adverse affect on them. As it is, students have been the worst sufferers in the pandemic as their lives have been totally changed. They should not be made to suffer more. Although online classes are being held in most schools and colleges, the quality of learning leaves a lot to be desired. Also, some students, both from affluent and underprivileged households, have not adjusted well to the new scheme of things and are falling behind.

One is of the opinion that in line with online learning that is now increasingly being viewed as the best way to impart education online examination should also become the norm till things become normal. The only drawback in this will be that underprivileged students, who do not have access to computers or broadband connections, will be put at a disadvantage. But the government must think of a way of making the boards take online examination. Since physical classes are not being held for more than a year now, it will be very difficult to evaluate students on internal assessments. Even if the 10th standard exams are cancelled, the 12th standard exams must be held in online mode as they are vital for getting admissions in institutes of higher education. Although the government has said that an alternative evaluation structure will be worked out in consultation with all stakeholders for transition of 12th standard students to higher learning institutions that is easier said than done. The best way would be to hold online examinations.
