The developments in Afghanistan are a clear victory for the Taliban and Pakistan and a embarrassing defeat for the US. Twenty years later, things have turned a full circle and an even stronger Taliban is once in control of Afghanistan, boding ill for the security environment in Asia and the world. This despite best of intentions displayed by the Americans which unfortunately did not work out as planned as the US negotiators did not read the devil in the minds of Taliban and its principal backer Pakistan. Relying completely on the Doha agreement, the US made a huge mistake by trusting the Taliban and leaving Afghans at the mercy of their blood-thirsty mercenaries. The US is solely responsible for the mess and the horrors that are likely to happen in the short term and the threat to world security in long term.

For India, the threat is multifold. There are confirmed reports of links between the Taliban and al-Qaeda and other Pakistan-sponsored terror groups. These links will be strengthened and maybe Pakistan would shift them to Afghanistan to escape scrutiny by FATF and come out of its grey list. That would give it immense financial breathing space.  Further, these groups, with Taliban's backing, might make a renewed attempt to spread terror in Kashmir and the rest of India. India's many projects in Afghanistan are also under threat. Although India made the mistake of delaying making serious contact with the Taliban, it is a given that it is unlikely to get any favours as Pakistan will not let that happen. But India will have to protect its interests and negotiate with them. With Pakistan, China and Russia coming out in support of the Taliban, it is likely that new equations will emerge in the region and unfortunately, they will pose a serious security threat to India.
