Once again, China has said that Arunachal Pradesh is not a part of India and belongs to it. It has been saying this for a long time now. It forcefully claimed all of Arunachal as its own in 2006 when the Chinese ambassador to India said so amidst a border standoff at the tip of Sikkim. It has once again reiterated the same when it was charged that the PLA had abducted five men from Arunachal. The Chinese have said that how can they 'abduct' their own citizens since Arunachal Pradesh belongs to them. They have always protested when elections are held in Arunachal or when any Union minister or any dignitary visits the state. Most recently, they objected when Home Minister Amit Shah visited the state in February 2020 on the occasion of the 34th Foundation Day of the state. At that time Beijing had said that his trip violated China's "territorial sovereignty and sabotaged political mutual trust".
It is strange that China keeps claiming sovereignty over Arunachal despite the fact that the people of the state have been voting in elections and have decided that they belong to India. India has been making enormous investments in the state for its development and even has Kiren Rijiju, the Member of Parliament from Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency, as a minister in the Union cabinet. China cannot ignore this and its claims over the state are nothing but arm twisting and pressure tactic.
In the present incident of the PLA allegedly abducting 5 men from China's border with Arunachal, instead of treating it as a humanitarian issue given the tension and fear in the minds of their families, the Chinese have decided to play politics. This is against all international rules. They must help the Indian authorities in locating and safely reuniting the men with their families. What is happening between the two countries at the LAC should not result in ordinary citizens being harmed. After all, they are not spies or army men. Further, as per reports they did not stray into Chinese territory but were taken by force from across the border. Contrast this with another report where the Indian army took good care of three Chinese citizens who strayed into India in north Sikkim and sent them back to China it is clear that the Chinese are acting like villains.
