Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastro intestinal disorder. One in five person suffer from it. It causes abdominal pains, bloating and gas. It sometimes makes you run to the bathroom after every meal and at other times your feel like moving your bowels but can't.
Why does it happen? The muscles of your digestive system start having abnormal contractions that affect your bowel movements and your gut becomes sensitive. The pain and the urge to go to the bathroom might make you avoid social functions, hamper your work or even your lifestyle.
People with IBS should avoid foods that contain hard to digest carbohydrates (FODMAP).These are found in apples, milk and cauliflower, among other foods. IBS patients should go for a low -FODMAP diet. Stress management is also crucial to keep the gut healthy. Although soluble fibre and osomatic laxatives often prescribed by doctors, do reduce the perm and clear the bowels, it is better for IBS patients to go for a fibre rich diet to avoid constipation or diarrhea. The more you keep your gut healthy the lesser the chances of suffering.
Although IBS can be triggered due to bacterial infection such as salmonella, it normally happens due to slow or spastic movements of the colon, abnormal serotin levels in the colon or mild cellac disease that damages the intestines. Hence people should take care not to eat outside food maintain proper diet and keep their gut healthy.
