Tihar Jail: Protectors Turn Mute Spectators

About the Author

Sunil Garodia Linus tackles things head-on. He takes sides in his analysis and it fits excellently with our editorial policy. No 'maybe's' and 'allegedly' for him, only things in black and white.

In a disturbing CCTV footage that shows a posse of policemen in Tihar jail watching as mute spectators while a rival gang stabs, kicks, hits and finishes off gangster Sunil Tajpuria inside the jail premises. The policemen are supposed to act swiftly to prevent any flare-up between prisoners by actively intervening with all at their command, including force, to ensure that none of the prisoners under their watch are injured by others, let alone killed in broad daylight.

The incident happened after the first attack in which Tajpuria was effectively killed in the courtyard and the cops had covered his body with a sheet and taken it inside. The footage shows the assailants removing the sheet and then repeatedly stabbing and kicking his lifeless body to ensure that he is totally finished. The policemen just stood there watching as if a film shooting was going on. This clearly shows the abdominal state of affairs at Tihar jail.

It is strange that despite CCTV installed in the jail, the policemen were not afraid of being held up for doing nothing to stop the culprits. Were they afraid of the gang that murdered Tajpuria in their presence? Did they have ‘orders’ from above to let them do what they wanted to do? Or were they 'bought' by the gang that carried out the killing? Whatever the reason, there must be a high level inquiry and those policemen (they can be identified in the footage) guilty of dereliction of duty and worse must be handed out exemplary punishment to ensure that such an incident does not take place in future. Three assistant superintendents, four wardens and another staff member have been suspended by the jail authorities but they must face charges for dereliction of duty as per service rules and punished accordingly.

Tihar jail has become notorious for gang wars inside the premises, among other irregularities. It is time that the government took steps to ensure that it is run as a jail and not as the personal fiefdom of some well-connected prisoners.
