How does India expect its athletes and sportspersons to perform well if they are treated unfairly by the respective associations when it comes to providing training and living facilities during national camps, let alone being provided with world class equipment and coaches?

The shooters attending the national camp ahead of the World Cup in Cairo had to complain about unhygienic rooms allotted to them before the National Rifle Association of India (NHAI) shifted them to better accommodation at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in Tughlakabad in New Delhi.

But why were they allotted unhygienic rooms in the first place? Officials of the associations spend the body's funds in living at 5-star facilities and holding meetings at posh locations. But when it comes to the sportspersons, the ones who really bring glory to the nation, the idea is to cut costs and make them do with sub-standard accommodation and protein-less food.

Many times in the past, various athletes have complained about the poor quality of accommodation and food being provided to them in such camps. It is absolutely necessary that the sportspersons stay comfortably and get good food during training so that they can perform to their potential. The Sports ministry must look into these complaints seriously whenever they are raised and punish the officials responsible for the lapses. Also, a standard must be set for provision of good quality accommodation and protein-rich food at national camps which must be applicable to all associations.
