A 17-year-old girl from Savreji Kharg village in UP's Deoria district was killed and the family tried to dispose the body but it stuck on the railing of the Patwana bridge on the Deoria-Kasya road, where the police found it. Although the girl's mother has lodged a complaint with the police against the grandparents and other family members for thrashing the girl and killing her for her insistence to wear jeans and top, the police are not convinced and are probing other angles too.

It is sickening that in this age and time, families object to girls wearing certain dresses or using mobile phones or talking to boys. But how can family members be so cruel and heartless to thrash a girl with sticks and kill her and then try to dispose her body? It is hard to believe the matter was about dress. It could have been an honour killing. The facts will come out only after the police probe.

But the images of the girl's body hanging from the bridge were heart-wrenching. How long will girls bear extreme prejudice for not being a boy and not meeting the convoluted standards set for them by the patriarchal society in India? How long will they be questioned for each of their actions and kept subjugated for just being a girl? And then, if they choose to do something that is not as per the stifling standards set for them, how long will they be beaten and even killed?

Society has to recognize that girls have equal rights and equal potential to contribute towards the benefit of the society. Hence, they must be provided equal opportunities. Only then will the nation be able to harness their potential for constructive work. Keeping them subjugated or setting different standards for them is discriminatory and will continue to keep India back.
