There is more trouble in Delhi. After the Supreme Court order giving powers over bureaucrats to the Delhi government (except police, land and public order), it wasted no time and immediately removed services secretary Ashish More (there was drama in that too as More left the secretariat in a jiffy and went incommunicado for two days, finally accepting the order on Monday).
Now, the Delhi government has written to secretary, vigilance to withdraw all official work from special secretary, vigilance, YVVJ Rajshekhar, alleging corruption. The Delhi government has alleged that Rajshekhar is running an extortion racket and demands protection money in vigilance cases that come to him. It said that it had received many complaints against him.
Rajshekhar, on the other hand, has alleged that he is being targeted as he has the files of the excise scam as also the files pertaining to the case in which it has been alleged that disproportionate amount of money was spent to renovate and refurbish the home of Delhi chief minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal. Rajshekhar has asked the vigilance secretary to bring the matter to the notice of the high court and obtain a stay against the action against him.
This is a sensitive situation that needs to be handled with much care. If what the Delhi government is alleging is true, Rajshekhar needs to go immediately. No officer, especially a vigilance officer, can be allowed to take protection money from alleged wrongdoers and bury or delay their cases. But if what Rajshekhar is alleging is true, then there must be a transparent method by which all sensitive files under his watch are marked and transferred to another officer before he is relieved of his duties. The AAP government has the power to remove him, but since his allegation is serious, and the matters are controversial and sub-judice, it must ensure that the files are transferred to secretary, vigilance and are not tampered with.
