Don't Be Overzealous In Following PM Modi's Request For Lighting Diyas

Prime Minister Modi has a way of involving people in some of his schemes. He knows that the painful lockdown has made people feel uninvolved in the fight against COVID-19 as they are confined to their homes. Hence, he made an appeal to the people to switch off their lights for 9 minutes on Sunday, April 5 and light diyas, candles or flash torches or mobile phone flashlights from their windows, balconies or doors. He said that this would be our way to show that the darkness that has descended on us due to the coronavirus infections will be fought unitedly by all Indians. He congratulated all Indians for observing the lockdown with discipline and a sense of service.

But the Prime Minister is aware that there are some people who are overzealous and take his request to the extremes. When he had asked people to clap, ring bells, beat on thalis or make other sounds to appreciate the works of those who were leading the fight against the disease, some people had forgotten he had also asked them to follow social distancing and do so only from their homes. There were processions and gatherings where people clapped and rang bells, making a mockery of the need for social distancing. Hence, this time, Modi expressly said that "I have one request. During this event, no one is supposed to assemble on roads or in their colonies. This task needs to be completed from balconies and doorways of your homes".

There is no doubt that the people of India will once again support the Prime Minister by doing what he has requested. There is also no doubt that this time, people will avoid assembling at common places to light diyas. They should remember that this is not a festivity. It is a solemn occasion and it should be done as the Prime Minister wants it to be done. It will prove that the whole of India is united in fighting COVID-19. If people still try to show their overzealousness, this time they should be arrested and charged under the Disaster Management Act, 2011.
