Kolkata lost eighteen of its own at the Chor Bagan Durga Puja yesterday. Families went out to see the goddess and did not come home. Nothing we write today can answer that grief, and this journal does not pretend otherwise.
A heavy crowd and a sudden downpour turned a festive lane into a deadly crush. People ran for shelter, others pushed forward, and the space was too narrow for either. Such moments take seconds, and the cost is counted in lives.
Today is for prayer. We pray for the souls of the departed, for strength to the bereaved, and for the swift recovery of everyone hurt.
This is not the hour for blame, and we will not use the dead for political gain. Public grief should not become a contest of accusations. The families deserve dignity, and the city deserves answers that come through a fair and orderly inquiry, not through shouting.
Once the mourning has been honoured, one duty remains. Every Puja committee, every administrator and every visitor must ask what can be done so that this never happens again. Rain is predictable in October. Crowds at famous pandals are predictable every year. Planning for both is not a luxury.
The goddess is invoked in Bengal as the one who removes suffering. Let this yearâs loss move us to remove the causes of such suffering. May the departed rest in peace.
