Even a child knows that the country is facing a serious threat from coronavirus and that is why he is unable to go to school and has to learn on the computer, miss his extra classes or is not allowed to play in the garden of the complex. Yet, many of our politicians and some citizens do not understand, and more importantly, do not care.

The lavish and crowded (though Kumaraswamy said that only 70 close relatives attended, the video showed more than 100 attendees, while the government has mandated that not more than 20 people can attend such events) wedding event of H D Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Gowda, where social distancing norms were thrown to the winds, is a pointer to this. The lead picture of this story, tweeted by ANI, proves everything. The Prime Minister has also asked people to take extra care of the elderly. But the way the 86-year old former prime minister H D Deve Gowda was exposed to the crowd without any protection was deplorable.

When asked why he chose to hold the function despite the lockdown, Kumaraswamy chose the usual combative route politicians take when their actions are questioned. From invoking the crowd of migrant workers at the Bandra station in Mumbai to charging Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa of flouting social distancing norms the previous week to claiming that the district administration had cleared the event and issued passes to all those who attended, Kumaraswamy did not once think he had done anything wrong.

But he should know that when an event of such a scale is organized, it takes a lot of people to put it together. The way the hall was decorated, it must have taken a huge team of workers to do it. Did they follow social distancing norms? Even if one of them was a carrier, it could have exposed any of the guests to the virus. The guests were also not wearing masks and were seen mingling freely. What message does this send to the people of India?

Politicians have to learn to practice what they preach. There cannot be one set of rules for the general people and another for the rich and the powerful. Kumaraswamy should have held the wedding with just 20 guests to set an example or if he wanted to have a grand event, he should have held it in more favourable times. By ignoring all rules he has set the wrong example. He has also shown that he does not care for the safety of his family, his relatives, the community and the nation.
