Sunil Garodia Linus tackles things head-on. He takes sides in his analysis and it fits excellently with our editorial policy. No 'maybe's' and 'allegedly' for him, only things in black and white.

In a distressing incident, Bengaluru-based data scientist and start-up founder Suchana Seth allegedly smothered her 4-year-old son in a Goa serviced apartment and then tried to slit her own wrists. When she failed to kill herself, she dumped her son's lifeless body in a bag and tried to flee to Bengaluru in a rented car. She was apprehended in Karnataka's Chitradurga district after Goa Police were alerted by the staff of the serviced apartment as they found blood in her room. The woman has claimed that she did not intend to kill the child but he died 'suddenly'. The police are yet to ascertain what made her do what she is alleged to have done.

Inquiries have not confirmed whether her start-up, The Mindful AI Lab, was functional or had projects in hands. It is also not confirmed whether any people were employed by her. The address given for the firm is also a co-working place and not a proper office. The woman had separated from her husband and the divorce proceedings are in the final stage. She told investigators that she came to Goa with her child as she did not want her estranged husband to meet him. The husband was supposed to see the child on the day after she left for Goa.

Unless the police are able to establish the reason for her actions, it is difficult to say whether she was in financial trouble or was otherwise distressed and disturbed to kill the child and try to take her own life. But whatever happened was extremely dreadful. The woman was reportedly well-educated and an expert in AI ethics. With several opportunities opening up in the AI field now, she could have used her expertise to have a settled life for her son and self. But she was probably depressed due to the divorce proceedings or maybe the fact that the court would grant custody of the child to her husband and has ruined her life. The son is dead and she faces an uncertain future.
