People are talking about the rare Budget that has chosen to eschew populism even as five states go to elections in the next two weeks. But people are of the opinion that even though sops were not announced, the government should have taken the high inflation into consideration to provide some relief to the middle class and the low wage earner. They also say that the government's efforts toward job creation are hardly visible in the Budget and will do nothing for the hugely distressed army of job seekers.

People say that even though no new taxes means that no extra burden, the fact remains that with people with salaries that have remained largely static at the lower levels facing difficulties making ends meet, the government should have given a thought about providing some relief, perhaps by raising the standard deduction limit. People say that with food inflation very high, the distress in lower middle class homes is too stark to be ignored.

People are also worried that the government has chosen to largely ignore education and health. They say that education is the sector that has suffered the most in the last two years and the government should have allocated more to this sector to make up for the loss in learning. They say that since the shortcomings in the health infrastructure of India were cruelly exposed by the pandemic, the government should have increased the allocation to make investments in specific areas.

But people say they are hopeful that if the government invests in infrastructure as promised, business will boom for some sectors and upstream and downstream industries will benefit. Then, they say, hiring will improve and salaries will rise. People say that huge figures do not make much sense unless the execution is timely and according to plan. Hence, they say that much will depend on how, and how soon, the government fulfills its promises.
