Hinduism has 36 crore Gods and Goddesses to bow to. The figure keeps on increasing as adherents discover new deities to worship. The latest to join the pantheon is Corona Mata, or the 'goddess' that is likely to deliver the faithful from the dreaded coronavirus.
A temple was built for the so-called corona mata in UP in Juhi Sukulpur village near Pratapgarh. A number of faithful used to visit the temple and worship the 'goddess'. Before this, India Today reported in May that a similar corona mata idol was placed in a temple in Coimbatore.
Such things spread superstition and fear among the people and promote unscientific thinking. But those who build the temples feed on this fear and make money from the offerings. While it was reported that the district administration had demolished the temple in UP, other reports suggest that it was a ploy to grab land and it was demolished by one of the land owners. Reports also suggest that a probe has been ordered to find out who built the temple in UP.
When fear and superstition become the overriding factors, science and logic take a backseat. Vaccine hesitancy among a huge number of people is also due to religious beliefs and this is putting India behind in its fight against the dreaded virus.
Administrations all over India must keep a watch and prevent such temples from coming up. All such temples must be razed immediately. Those who build them must be punished for spreading superstition.
