It is good that the UP police have registered an FIR in the matter of inflammatory speeches being made at the closed-door Dharam Sansad of several Hindu religious organizations at Haridwar which was attended by many seers. Video footage from the meeting is circulating in social media and was aired on news channels. It shows that venom was spewed at one community in particular and many speakers spoke in a very foul and dangerous manner. They demanded arms for Hindus and called for genocide of Muslims. It was anti-national in nature for the reason that it can cause enmity between communities. It remains to be seen what action will be taken in this matter.

No religion gets elevated by demeaning or discrediting another religion. People of one religion cannot prove their superiority by abusing or belittling people of another religion. On the contrary, they just show how mean their minds are when they want to lynch or send fellow citizens who belong to a different religion to another country.

That this happened at a religious congregation is all the more disturbing. Indians have seen politicians make hate speeches to polarize the electorate for their petty gains. But seers making, or listening to, hate speeches shows that the problem has taken deeper roots.

Basically this is a political fight as some parties think that through years of 'appeasement' the Muslim community punches above its weight when it comes to political benefits or cornering welfare schemes. Without going into the truthfulness of this premise, one feels that this political viewpoint must be tackled politically without involving religion. But the sad fact is that these parties think that they will achieve their political ends only by polarizing the electorate along religious lines.

This can be extremely dangerous and will negate the sabka saath sabka vikas slogan that Prime Minister Modi uses to emphasize that he is not the Pradhan Mantri but the Pradhan Sevak of the nation. Further, seers and mahants have no business going after people of another religion. Intolerance has no place in the practice of the Hindu religion.

The funny thing is that administrations ban stand-up comics for allegedly cracking anti-national jokes while letting these poison-spewing 'luminaries' get away with anything.
