One always used to think that every citizen of the country, irrespective of caste, community, regional or religious affiliations, was ready to make sacrifices if it was in his or her own interest as also the interest of the nation. But after what happened in Moradabad yesterday, oneâs faith in that thought has been shaken.
When a police team accompanied by doctors and other health workers, along with an ambulance, went to the house of a Muslim corona positive patient to take his family to a quarantine centre, they were attacked, first by a stone-pelting crowd and then bricks were thrown on their vehicles from nearby buildings. The regrettable thing is that the video of the incident showed that bricks were thrown by women from rooftops. Why is this happening? Don't people in the locality fear for their own well-being and that of their families, forget about the community? Do they not want India not to progress to the community transmission stage? Are they not aware that contact with a positive patient increases the risk of infection and that quarantining is the only way to prevent that? Then why did they behave as they did and prevent the family from being taken away for quarantine?
The video was scary. Our health workers and police personnel are doing exemplary work in our fight against the pandemic. They are our "corona warriors". They had gone there not to arrest anyone but to save them from the pandemic. Yet, they were brutally attacked. It was not improper on part of a young doctor to say that he will hand in his resignation immediately if he is asked to go to such areas. Why are some Muslims bent of giving the whole community a bad name? What were they trying to achieve? Why are some people not able to understand the danger associated with Covid-19 and why are they obstructing health workers from doing their duty?
