There is nothing that can be put forward as an excuse for the barbarity Pakistani soldiers displayed at the LoC by mutilating the bodies of Indian soldiers. There are conventions that govern hostilities and war situations between governments. Most of them are guided by human rights but all of them are clear about the fact that while killing an enemy soldier is unavoidable in war-like situations, chopping off body parts is not. But Pakistan cares a hoot about international conventions.

The blood trail proves beyond doubt that the Pakistani soldiers carried the mutilated parts across the border. What perverted sense of triumph makes them take body parts as ‘trophies’ is beyond comprehension! They had done this earlier too. India has expressed its unhappiness in the strongest of words and has warned Pakistan that such acts will not be tolerated.

But the time is not for retaliation. India cannot be as perverted as Pakistan, nor can it think like the daughter of the martyred soldier who wants 50 heads for her father’s head. When the time comes, a proper response must be given and maybe the count will be higher than 50 heads, but not in mutilated form. India is sensible enough to follow international conventions. Also, anger, outrage and misplaced courage cannot be allowed to displace military planning and strategy and diplomacy in countering Pakistan’s barbaric act.

As India makes every effort to control insurgency in J & K and win international support for the restraint it shows in face of such provocative acts by Pakistan, the neighbouring country is going to indulge in more such misadventures. It has lost all control over the terror unit it sponsors. Already, there are reports that terror units have resumed training and infiltration in the areas where surgical strikes were carried out by India. But as time goes by, most countries have come to realize that Pakistan is just hiding behind the excuse of non-state actors while the majority of attacks against India are being planned and carried out by the Pakistani army.
