A person has been detained by the police in Kolkata for organizing fake vaccination camps in the name of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) at various locations in the city. The man, Debanjan Deb, was arrested after actor and TMC MP Mimi Chakraborty lodged a complaint with the police after inaugurating one such camp, getting jabbed there and not receiving an SMS acknowledgment for the same. She said she found something amiss as there was no confirmation by SMS that she had received her first jab.
The sheer audacity of the man is incomprehensible. He took huge risk by using the KMC logo and vaccination banners at prominent locations in Kolkata. In a city where local councilors and other political workers always have a say in such camps, it is also difficult to understand how he escaped being caught before. There is almost no chance of organizing a public vaccination camp like the ones he set up without the permission and support of the local politicians and the KMC councilor.
The police are investigating the matter. The man says he procured genuine Covishield vials from suppliers in the city wholesale market and in front of the state health ministry office. If true, it means that vaccines meant for government or private centres are finding their way in the black market, which is highly dangerous. Meanwhile, those who were jabbed, including Mimi Chakraborty, are scared and are waiting reports to find out what actually went inside their bodies.
One fails to understand the motive behind organizing such camps. If they were organized in the name of KMC, the vaccines must have been provided free of cost. Why would a person spend huge sums to organize these camps without any gain? Even if he wanted to provide free social service, he could have gone through official channels. The truth will come out only after the police completes the investigation.
