The Last Hour (streaming on Prime Video) opens as a murder mystery that seems to take in murders and rapes happening in a tourist haven in the mountains. While Arup (Sanjay Kapoor), a Mumbai cop who has been transferred back to the northeast, is assigned on the case of unexplained murders, he is helped by local policemen not all of whom are kosher. While investigating the case, Arup finds that his subordinates are playing games and comes across a shamam Dev (Karma Takapa) who can talk to souls of the recently dead and find out what happened in the last hour of his or her life. Arup requisitions his help in solving the murder cases only to find that in the world of shamams, a deadly game is being played by Yama Nadu (Robin Tamang) who wants to ‘steal’ Dev’s powers to rule over the world. While this could have made for interesting plot twists, the show is let down by the writers who weave in a implausible romance between Dev and Pari (Shaylee Kishen) and their trysts in the supernatural mode, Arup’s past in the form of his wife’s (played by Raima Sen who has nothing to do) and several other stories that take a lot away from the main plot and make the viewer lose interest.

The series is beautifully shot and the rugged mountains come to life. The use of actors from the northeast gives the show a natural feel and Sanjay Kapoor and Sahana Goswami perform creditably. Karma Takapa with his good looks could have made a better impression if his face was more expressive. Further, at eight episodes the series is too long and given the subject, fails to keep the viewer engaged. Tighter editing and better writing resulting in five or six episodes could have done wonders to the series.
