The BJP has decided that Yogi Adityanath, Pramod Sawant and N Biren Singh will get a second term as chief ministers of UP, Goa and Manipur respectively. It is still undecided whether to give Pushkar Singh Dhami a fresh term in Uttarakhand or go for someone else as Dhami had lost the elections.

While there was no doubt about Yogi Adityanath as he was the face of the party in UP, had the full support of the party high command, is fast emerging as the poster boy of both BJP and the Hindutva brand of politics it follows and the election was in a way a referendum on his proclaimed sushashan, since the BJP had chosen not to declare its face in the other states, there was suspense over who would become the chief minister.

Sawant's position was threatened as there was huge anti-incumbency in Goa and it was not clear whether the party would win. There were indications that in case of a hung assembly, the BJP would have to choose a new chief minister. But by making the party win 20 seats, Sawant became a strong contender. Dhami was also in a similar position and the party's spectacular win in Uttarakhand would have made him a natural choice but he unfortunately lost in his seat. That has put the BJP in a spot. N Biren Singh's position became strong as this is the first time the BJP has won an absolute majority in Manipur.

Another big problem for the BJP is to finalize the cabinet for UP. With calculations of caste, regions and allies, along with the fact that many sitting ministers, including deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, have lost the elections, the UP cabinet formation is becoming a sensitive exercise. Chief minister-designate Yogi Adityanath has been conferring with top BJP leaders including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and J P Nadda to come up with a team that ruffles the least of feathers.
