In a disturbing incident, a sick and dizzy leopard, who wandered out of the forest into an area inhabited by humans was harassed and treated as an object of joy by villagers who clicked selfies with the animal and also tried to ride it. At other times, the villagers in Dewas district of MP would have vanished inside their homes on seeing a leopard but when they found that the animal was debilitated and unable to move properly, they felt that they could have some fun at its expense.

It is disgusting that the villagers did not think fit to inform the forest guards about the state of the leopard's health so that it could be taken for treatment. The forest guards were alerted only after the selfies became viral on social media. The animal was taken away, first to safety and then to Bhopal for treatment.

It is a known fact that most people would beat a person when they are down; the villagers also did the same to the leopard. They chased it and worsened its condition. They tried to ride it. If the forest guards had not arrived in time, the poor animal might have died. Awareness must be created to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and villagers inform the forest guards or the nearest police station on seeing such sick animals wander out of forest areas.
