Nerves of steel and sheer grit and determination were on ample display at the Bristol County Ground in England as the Indian women's cricket team snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat in an excellent rearguard action by allrounder Sneh Rana, making her Test debut and playing for India after five years and wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia.

Coming together at 240 for 8 in the 90th over, Sneh and Taniya took India to 344 without being separated in the 121st over when the match was ended by mutual consent. Sneh was unbeaten on 80 while Taniya scored 44. An unbeaten ninth wicket stand of 104 runs scored over 31 overs is a rarity and when it saves the team from a certain defeat, it becomes special. Rana had taken 4 England wickets in the only innings they played to complete a memorable debut.

The match showed that India's middle order is brittle with both captain Mithali Raj and star batter Harmanpreet Kaur woefully out of form. Mithali scored 2 and 4 in the two innings while Harmanpreet got 4 and 8. Shikha Pandey and Punam Raut also did not contribute. Opener Shefali Verma was solid at the top. With scores of 96 and 63 in the two innings, she was named Player of the Match.

If India seeks to make any impression in the 3-match one day series that will now be played, the middle order will have to contribute. Players like Mithali, Harmanpreet, Punam and Shikha will have to raise their hand and be counted. They have the experience and just need to adapt to the English conditions. Having got the upper hand in the only Test, the Englishwomen will make an all out effort to crush the Indian challenge. India's batters will have to put runs on the board to make the series competitive.
