Putting all speculation to rest, Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously elected the leader of the BJP legislature party in Bengal. Adhikari, once a trusted lieutenant of Mamata Banerjee, will be the next chief minister, the first from the BJP, of Bengal. His name was proposed by senior leader Dilip Ghosh and immediately accepted by loud cheers from the MLA-elects.

Adhikari then proceeded to the Lok Bhawan to meet the state Governor to stake his claim. He will be sworn-in in a grand ceremony at the iconic Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata at 11am on Saturday in the presence of PM Modi, home minister Amit Shah, other senior BJP leaders and chief ministers of most BJP-ruled states.

In his acceptance speech, Adhikari said that as PM Modi has said, fear is now out of Bengal and trust is in. He promised to send back all infiltrators, end the syndicate and extortion rackets run by the TMC, conduct an inquiry in the Sandeshkhali incident and punish all those who were responsible for various crimes committed under the previous government. He also promised to take the state on the path of economic resurgence.

There are high hopes from the new government as nearly after 50 years, Bengal is getting a 'double-engine' government with BJP ruling at both the Centre and in the state.
