Although all kinds of damage control efforts are going on, the Hathras gang-rape and the subsequent death (murder?) of the victim has blown up big time in the face of Yogi Adityanath and the BJP. The total inefficiency of the administration for 15 days and the active involvement of the police in shielding the accused and then trying to possibly erase the evidence by hurriedly cremating the body has outraged India.
What was the urgency to cremate the victim before dawn and in a hush-hush manner? Why did the UP police not handover the body to the victim's family? Why did it not allow the victim's family the dignity of performing the last rites? Why was the body cremated as if it was unidentified and needed to be disposed of quickly? Only the administration of Yogi Adityanath and the UP police can provide answers to these questions.
But even the outrage and the grief of the family did not bestir the UP government. It took a call from Prime Minister Modi with the message that the guilty must be strictly punished for Yogi to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to enquire into the incident. But the victim's family has had enough of the UP police. It wants the inquiry to be done by anyone but them. The victim's dying statement confirming rape is enough to nail the accused and the other video footage of the cremation and other incidents being aired by the media will be enough to identify and nail the policemen involved.
It is a matter of shame that women and Dalits do not get justice under the present UP government. All events that happened in the horrifying crime point to a systematic attempt by the UP police to shield and protect the accused as they were from the higher castes. There are many unanswered questions and the culprits have also multiplied. The four accused had raped the girl. If that was not gruesome enough, the administration broke her and possibly caused her death. All the culprits who let this happen must be brought to book without delay and given the harshest punishment allowed by law.
