It is no surprise that relatives of politicians keep showing their arrogance in public. This is the result of the kid gloves policy that the police had hitherto applied in such cases. Hence it is good that the Delhi police has acted with uncommon efficiency in the case of Ashish Pandey, son of ex-MP Rakesh Pandey of the BSP and brother of sitting BSP MLA, Ritesh Pandey. Ashish got into a tiff over car parking with a young couple at the entrance of the posh Hyatt Regency hotel in Bhikaji Cama Place in the national capital. He was seen threatening the couple with his gun. Even if the arm was licensed, its use in public for such a small thing as a tiff over car parking is obviously criminal intimidation which is punishable under sec. 503 & 159 of the IPC besides other sections and laws, including the Arms Act.

The Delhi police have registered an FIR and issued a look-out notice. They are coordinating with UP police who have already visited the home of Pandey to nab him. He is still absconding. Power should breed humility and a desire to serve the people. Instead it breeds arrogance bordering on contempt for the common people and a desire to fill own coffers. Hence, it has become a recurring theme in India for relatives, especially sons, of petty politicians who are like dons in their own backyards to display arrogance in public. From a Rocky Yadav who cannot digest someone overtaking his car and kills that young man to an Ashish Pandey unable to tolerate someone usurping a parking lot and threatens them with his gun, the tolerance level of these brats is plumbing by the day.

But it is good that law enforcers are waking up to the problem. Rocky Yadav was apprehended quickly despite his father’s attempt to hide and protect him. He was sentenced in a record 16 months. The Delhi police have already started prosecution proceedings against Ashish. If these brats are nabbed and punished quickly, it will restore the people’s faith in law enforcement agencies and the judiciary. It will also dispel the notion that sons and relatives of VIPs, especially politicians, can get away with anything.
