Why Should Rhea Chakraborty's Alleged Sins Be Used To Malign All Bengali Girls?

Sunil Garodia Linus tackles things head-on. He takes sides in his analysis and it fits excellently with our editorial policy. No 'maybe's' and 'allegedly' for him, only things in black and white.

There are many leads being probed in the unnatural death of Sushant Singh Rajput. One of the leads is the alleged mental harassment, illegal confinement and financial losses caused to the late actor by his former live-in girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty. Sushant's father has alleged all this and more to claim that it was Rhea who pushed his son to commit suicide. Without going into the authenticity or otherwise of the claim and the allegations, one needs to strongly condemn the way many people on social media are degrading all Bengali girls and Bengalis by calling them names just because Rhea is Bengali.

Trolls on social media have been calling Bengali girls everything short of the P-word and even there, they are leaving nothing to the imagination. Bengali girls are being called "gold diggers" and are said to have powers to "practice black magic". Many trolls feel they are "easy lays" (obnoxious words, if one may say so) and will do anything for money. A mini-war is going on in several threads on social media where some Bengali showbiz celebrities are rightly defending the tribe.

It is preposterous for anyone to blame an entire community for the alleged sins of one individual or family. The film industry has seen illustrious Bengali women serve it with unparalleled distinction. Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bachchan, Rakhee, Kajol, Bipasha Basu and Mouni Roy, to name just a few, have never had a black mark on their reputation. There are several young Bengali girls who are now working in TV serials and OTT shows. They are very professional and give priority to their work over anything else.

The abuse of Bengali girls on social media must stop. The cyber cell of Kolkata Police has already taken cognizance of the fact after it received several complaints. They are collecting information and will proceed against the abusers. The relatives, fans and well-wishers of Sushant Singh Rajput would be well advised to direct their ire at the individual and her family who they feel is 'guilty' of abetting his suicide (although that too is premature considering investigations are still on) and stop defaming an entire community. The police must come down hard on such trolls.
