When India bowled out the Aussies for just 195 on the first day of the second Test, many were surprised, especially former Australian players. While they congratulated the Indian bowlers on their wonderful performance and Ajinkye Rahane for leading the side exceedingly well with smart bowling changes and intelligent field placing, most of them, especially Shane Warne, expressed a doubt that if Australia could get out inside a day, would the Indians fare better.
"What a terrific day of cricket at the
MCG today. Congrats to the ground staff on preparing the best wicket at the MCG
for a long time. More of these type of pitches please! The Indian bowlers were
outstanding too & very well lead by @ajinkyarahane88! Can
India bat all day?" was what Warne tweeted at the end of the day's play.
But the Indians showed them, and the
world, that one session of nightmare (when they were bowled out for just 36
runs in the second innings of the first Test) could not be put as a label on
this team. They are much better than that. Ajinkye Rahane again led from the
front with a brilliant century as the Indians batted for one full day and close
to another session to build up a lead strong enough to put the Aussies on the
back foot.
When the Aussies came in to bat for
the second time, the Indians did not relax. They kept up the pressure and did
not let them get any kind of grip on the match. At the end of the third day's
play, the Aussies were tottering at 133/6 and it was just a matter of time
before India won and squared the 4-match series.
This is the stuff Test cricket is made
of. A team that was down in the dumps just a few days ago bounced back in style
and the Aussies did not know what hit them. The Indian bowlers displayed a
new-found urge to attack, the captain backed them with close-in fielders and
the batsmen showed a resolve to fight it out. Well done, India.
