Except for
a good innings from K L Rahul, a stunning catch by Virat Kohli (to dismiss the
dangerous Shakib Al Hassan) and a spirited bowling display, initially, by the
bowlers, nothing went right for Indian in the first ODI versus Bangladesh even
as the regulars were back in the team. Batting first, India made a sub-par 186
(although some thought it was par) as K L Rahul pitched in with an unbeaten
innings of 73 to save the blushes. Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Washington
Sundar got starts but were unable to cpaitalize on it in the face of some good
bowling by Bangladesh on a pitch that was assisting both seamers and spinners.
Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hassan showed why he is still indispensible in
this squad by picking up 5 Indian wickets for just 32 runs in his 10 overs
which included two maidens. India could manage only 186 and folded up in just
41.2 overs.
It seemed
that Bangladesh would get to 187 without sweat but they had not reckoned with a
spirited fight back by the Indian bowlers. Mohammed Shiraj (10-1-32-3) was
outstanding and so was Washington Sundar (5-0-17-2). At 136 for 9, India had
Bangladesh on the mat. But call it the brilliance of Mehidy Hassan or the
inability of the Indian bowlers to deliver the knockout punch in the end,
Hassan pulled off the impossible by scoring the 51 runs needed from that point
with last man Mustafizur and handed a shocking defeat to India.
India's
fielding left a lot to be desired with stand-in wicketkeeper K L Rahul dropping
a sitter to give Mehidy Hassan a life when the hosts still needed 32 runs for
victory. Washington Sundar too was guilty of not going for a catch at third
man. Although it could have been a bad day
in office for the Indians, they carry a lot of negatives from this match. The
batting unit is not clicking and they have to show a lot more agility and focus
on the field. India will have a tough time coming back in the three-match series
after this loss.
