In the end, the much anticipated qualifier between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) turned out to be completely one-sided. Much as DC tried, they could not reverse the trend of losing consecutively to MI in this IPL. Although they managed to get Rohit Sharma out cheaply, they allowed Quinton de Cock and Suryakumar Yadav, the in-form MI batsmen too many liberties and both of them gave MI a blazing start. At one time, it seemed that MI would post more than 240 on the board before R Ashwin pegged them back. The famed DC bowlers were strangely off-colour on the day. Both Rabada and Nortje bowled too much on the leg-side and their yorkers were easily converted into full-tosses by the likes of Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan who made merry in the slog overs to take MI to 200 in their quota of 20 overs.
DC started disastrously. They were 0/3 in the first two overs and then 20/4 in the fourth over, with all their frontline batsmen back in the pavilion. Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkye Rahane continued their woeful run in the tournament and Shikhar Dhawan was bowled by a beauty from Jasprit Bumrah. When Bumrah had Shreyas Iyer caught by Rohit Sharma at cover, DC were looking down the barrel. It was a no-contest from then on. Still, Marcus Stoinis and Axar Patel tried to make a contest out of it but the odds were against them as the required run rate kept on mounting. DC ended at 143 to lose the match by 57 runs.
With this, MI enter the final. Meanwhile, DC will wait to take another shot at the final slot by fighting it out with the winner of the match between RCB and SRH. But they will be hugely disappointed by their performance against MI. If they reach the final and play MI again, they will have to devise a strategy to counter the deadly duo of Bumrah and Boult if they hope to lay their hands on the IPL trophy for the first time.
