Afghanistan were no match for a full strength Indian team (minus Jasprit Bumrah). India registered a win by an innings and 300 runs inside three days in the only Test. It was the biggest ever win by the home side.
India chose to bat first after winning the toss on a wicket that looked, and was, flat. They put up a huge total of 564 for 8 declared as apart from Md Saleem (6 for 140) none of the Afghan bowlers made any impression. K L Rahul (100), Shubman Gill (126) Sai Sudarshan and Rishabh Pant (81 each) and Washington Sundar (52 not out) were the stars for India.
When the Afghans came out to bat, debutant Manav Suthar was too hot to handle for them. With excellent control over length and line, Suthar spun the ball and introduced demons in their minds on a pitch that was offering little or no help. He took 6 for 33, the best bowling figures by an Indian player in his first match. India enforced the follow-on after the visitors folded up for 152.
Washington Sundar (4 for 36) and Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 30) got into the act in the second innings to bowl the visitors out for just 112 and lead India to a historic win.For India, the positives were the form of their top order batters, including Rishabh Pant who had a bad IPL and the emergence of Manav Suthar as a front line left arm spinner. The sole negative was the below par performance of Md Siraj.
For Afghanistan, apart from the brilliant bowling by Md Saleem on a flat pitch, the first innings rearguard action by Rahmat Shah, who displayed maturity to play the balls on merit and the second innings performance of S Atal must have pleased the coaches. But the visitors will have a lot to learn on how to stay on the crease in the face of accurate bowling.
