IPL 2022 begins in Mumbai from today. It is bigger - with 10 teams instead of 8, and will consequently have more matches, 70 in total. A ten-team tournament is being staged after 11 years. The two new teams are Lucknow Supergiants and Gujarat Titans. After two years, the entire league will be played in India but just at 4 venues in two cities - Mumbai and Pune, to keep travelling at a minimum and minimize Covid risk.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the first match at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium tonight in what promises to be a cracker of a match. Both teams wear a new look as there have been many changes from last season. Both have new captains - Ravindra Jadeja for CSK and Shreyas Iyer for KKR. Although the core of both the teams has been retained, there are many new players who will be rearing to go and make a mark first up.

CSK will not have the services of their pillar of strength Faf du Plessis at the top of the order as he has moved to RCB this season. But they have an able and equally talented Devon Conway in his place. It remains to be seen how he performs in Indian conditions. For KKR, Shreyas Iyer is in the form of his life and would like to begin his new responsibility with a bang. Both teams are equally matched in all departments but CSK are more consistent and have better temperament. But on a given day, KKR have the ability to put it across any team. Thus, it will be a great opening match.
