With normalcy returning after the Covid disruption (although the dreaded virus is raising its head again in India), IPL 2023 will once again be a home-and-away affair with all teams hosting matches at their home grounds and then going to others' home ground for away matches. For three years now, the tournament was being played in just a few cities. A total of 10 teams - defending champions Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings - will involved in a round-robin league with the top four teams making the playoffs where there will be two qualifiers and an eliminator to decide the finalists as per the rules.

But this year, the IPL will see many changes in the rules. The biggest change is the introduction of an impact player. Teams will be allowed to bring in a substitute player at any point in the match. This impact player will be able to bowl, bat and field but not act as the skipper of the side. The other big change is the introduction of DRS for no-balls and wide-balls. Teams will now be allowed to refer the decision of the on-field umpire to the TV umpire for adjudication for such disputes. In another change, teams can now name the playing eleven after the toss. The wicketkeeper will now be penalized for ‘unfair movement” (moving before the batter strikes the ball). Finally, teams will be penalized for slow over rates. They will have to complete 20 overs in 90 minutes, failing which they will have to bring one more player inside the ring for as many overs as they bowl after the stipulated 90 minutes. These changes are expected to make the contests more competitive.

As defending champions Gujarat Titans play four-time champions Chennai Super Kings, fans can be assured of an electrifying tournament and fiercely contested matches for the next 29 days. The final will be played on May 28.
