With commentators still debating how the absence of Virat Kolhi after the first Test will affect Indiaâs chances in Australia comes the unfortunate news that both Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma will in most likelihood not be able to join the tour party for the red ball matches as they will not be fit in time. Obviously, since the Covid situation entails that any player entering Australia has to be put under the 14-day mandatory quarantine period both these players have to board the flight within the next 4 to 5 days to be able to meet the stipulation and still acclimatize themselves with the conditions there. This point has been made by none other than Ravi Shastri, the head coach of the Indian squad. It has been reported that Shreyas Iyer will be kept as reserve.
If both Rohit and Ishant are unable to make it to Australia, Indian team will suffer enormously. Rohit was expected to lend solidity to the batting in the absence of Virat Kohli. Iyer is a good player but he cannot match Rohitâ class. But it needs to be examined whether Rohitâs injury could have healed in time if he had not played the couple of matches he did in the IPL after his injury was reported. National duty has to be above everything and the Mumbai Indians should have kept this in mind before drafting Rohit to play those matches. The BCCI should have also intervened to ensure that.
Ishant Sharma, on the other hand, has a long history of injuries. That is one of the main reasons why he has never performed to his potential. Sharma has been successful in Australia and ex-Australian players, mainly Ian Chappel, have always spoken about his talent and ability in glowing terms. His loss will also be felt but India has a balanced bowling attack to absorb the shock. With the BCCI saying that no fresh players will be drafted, it remains to be seen what the selectors do and who they keep back from the white ball squad as reserves in the Test team. A decision whether Rohit and Ishant can join the team after the first two Tests is likely to be taken in the next few days, depending on their condition.
