India would have been in a completely dominating position on day two of the decisive Test against South Africa had the openers survived the 17 overs till the end of play. But that was not to be. Hence, India allowed the hosts to get back into the game after having them on the mat for the entire day, except for a brief period when Keegan Petersen was rebuilding the innings, first with van der Dussen and then with Temba Bavuma. Petersen batted with a lot of application to score 72 valuable runs for his team.

The India bowlers learnt from their mistakes in the second innings of the second Test and bowled a tight line and length which did not allow the South Africans any liberty. Jasprit Bumrah bowled exceptionally well, not allowing the batsmen to get him away and thus frustrating them. He ended up with figures of 23.3-8-42-5. He was well supported by Umesh Yadav and Md. Shami, both of whom took two wickets each. Shami's over in which he took two wickets in three balls ended Bavuma's resistance and changed the course of the match.

India begun well in the second essay but were soon pegged back as the South African bowlers were on fire. Mayank Agarwal survived once after taking a review but was out soon thereafter to a loose shot. K L Rahul's magical form has deserted him in the last two matches and soon it was Pujara and Kohli at the crease. But both the seniors batted with assurance in the face of some hostile bowling from Rabada, Jensen and Ngidi. At the end of days play, India were 57 for 2 and led by 70 runs overall. The match is now interestingly poised and if the Indian batters can stretch the lead to 300 plus, they stand an excellent chance of winning the match and the series and creating history.
