To allege that a seasoned player of the Indian cricket team deliberately under-performed due to his religious affiliation in order to let Pakistan win is disgusting. The trolls who are after Mohammed Shami are vermin. They do not understand that wearing the India jersey and cap and representing the country is the proudest feeling an Indian, irrespective of his religion, can experience. No Indian player can do what they are alleging Shami did.

Consider the facts too. No Indian bowler could make any impression on Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan as they clinically destroyed the Indian bowling and notched up the uncompetitive total the Indian batters had put on the board. Yes Shami gave away too many runs but that was not, and could not have been, deliberate. It was just that he was having a bad day and not able to deliver the ball in the right areas.

It is good that ex-players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virendra Sehwag and VVS Laxman, among others, have come out in Shami's support. A lion-hearted cricketer like Shami, who has always been a champion player and has contributed immensely to India's recent successes in all formats of the game despite personal problems (his wife had made several accusations against him), needs all the support to fight against these vicious trolls.

One match does not make or break a player. Shami's record speaks for itself and he does not need certificates from anyone, least of them from people who have never held a ball in their hand, let alone bowl to the best batsmen in the world and dismiss them. The fact is that the Indian team failed as a whole and to pick on Shami is unfair, discriminatory and malicious and if one may add, anti-national. Social media companies should remove these tweets and comments and take action against these malevolent persons.
